Fishing

There are some spectacular places to fish in Mariposa County. Lakes, streams, rivers and ponds are a great place to be anytime of the year with rod and hook.

Some of the many fishing locations available:

  • Merced River Hwy 140 | The Merced River is accessed via Hwy 140 from Mariposa. Numerous turnouts provide more then enough parking along the road & river that run parallel. The Merced River is located within hte California Dept. of Fish & Game’s Sierra District and various regulations apply depending on the river segment being fished.
  • Yosemite National Park | The fishing season is open from the last Saturday in April through November 15 and only artificial lures with barbless hooks may be used. The limit in this segment is 0-zero ranbow trout and 5 brown trout per day, with a possession limit of 10 brown trout.
  • Lake McClure & McSwain Hwy 132 | Both are renowned for their excellent bass, trout, panfish and salmon fishing, offering excellent opportunities to catch daily bag limits and large trophy fish. Both lakes have fish stocking programs and catching native and hold over fish of all species in common. Trolling and shore fishing are popular successful methods for pursuing fish.
